Ron DeSantis, a Republican running for president and governor of Florida, said on Friday that theories about election fraud in 2020 "did not prove to be true," in his most pointed criticism yet of former President Trump's election claims.
At a campaign stop in Iowa, the Florida governor reportedly said, "All those theories that were put out did not prove to be true."

"I don't think we conducted the election the way we wanted to, but that's not the same as saying [Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro] stole votes or something like that," he continued. You know, those theories turned out to be unfounded.
In the past, DeSantis has avoided inquiries about the former president's allegations that the 2020 election was "stolen," declining to say whether he thinks Trump lost the contest to Vice President Biden.
One day after Trump was arraigned in Washington on federal charges related to his attempts to hold onto power after losing the 2020 election, the Florida governor responded most recently.
DeSantis, however, did not hold back in criticizing the Justice Department over the indictment on Tuesday, attributing the most recent accusations against Trump to the "weaponization of government."
Following the publication of the indictment, he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, "As President, I will end the weaponization of government, replace the FBI Director, and ensure a single standard of justice for all Americans."

Additionally, he urged changes "so that Americans have the right to remove cases to their home districts." Trump asserted that it would be impossible for him to receive a fair trial in Washington prior to his Thursday arraignment.
"Washington, D.C., is a swamp, and it is unfair to have to stand trial before a jury that is reflective of the swamp mentality," DeSantis said.
