In a car parked outside a convenience store close to the Camp Lejeune military base in North Carolina, three US Marine Corps lance corporals have been discovered dead.
The Pender County Sheriff's Office released a statement on Tuesday stating that the bodies were found on Sunday morning at a Speedway gas station in Hampstead, North Carolina. During the course of looking into a report of a missing person, deputies came across their vehicle.
Both law enforcement authorities and the Marine Corps withheld any details regarding a potential cause of death. According to reports, the Sheriff's Office is looking into the case with help from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Tanner Kaltenberg, age 19, of Madison, Wisconsin, Merax Dockery, age 23, of Pottawatomie, Oklahoma, and Ivan Garcia, age 23, a native of Naples, Florida, were the dead Marines. The three lance corporals were all skilled drivers who operated a variety of tactical vehicles at Camp Lejeune for the 2nd Marine Logistics Group.
Brigadier General Michael McWilliams, their regimental commander, issued a statement expressing sympathy to the Marines' loved ones and friends. As they move through this extremely trying time, "our focus is on providing the necessary resources and support to those impacted by their tragic loss," the man said.
It is not believed that foul play occurred in this case. According to the Sheriff's Office, there does not appear to have ever been a threat to community members.
The incident occurred less than a month after a fiery one-vehicle car crash in Los Angeles County claimed the lives of four people, three of whom were Marines from Camp Pendleton in Southern California.
