Since a Trump victory could cost House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) his majority, he is remaining silent on the 2024 Republican presidential primary.

McCarthy is concerned that a civil war will break out within his caucus, particularly between Trump's backers and those of other candidates like Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), despite the fact that the majority of the Republican Party appears to be rallying behind former President Donald Trump. Some Republicans in the House think McCarthy is hoping for Trump to lose the nomination in order to keep his speakership. Several swing-state representatives' campaigns could be derailed by a Trump nomination, costing McCarthy his majority and possibly his leadership position.

An unnamed conservative House member told Politico, "The reality is, if we get Trump, there's probably a good possibility that we don't keep the House" next fall. McCarthy is aware of this. He is well aware that we will likely lose both New York and California if Donald Trump is the Republican nominee. We can kiss McCarthy's minority leader position goodbye if we lose the House. He has left.

McCarthy's fortunes may continue to decline if Trump begins to question why he hasn't received his endorsement, which could spell the end of his relevance if he fails to retake the majority in 2024.

Except for Rep. George Santos (R-NY), who faces reelection in 2024 despite federal indictments, no Republican in a swing seat has spoken out in favor of or against Trump.

Other Republicans in the House have a different opinion. McCarthy is a de facto supporter of Trump's candidacy, according to pro-Trump Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA), who told Politico that McCarthy is waiting to endorse Trump so as not to alienate allies of those competing against Trump.

It's like, 'Hey, you're with DeSantis right now. I don't mind. Meuser summed up McCarthy's 2024 message to Republicans as, "We get that. According to Mike Pence, Tim Scott is on his side. But we need to agree on who will be our victorious candidate in the end.

Despite McCarthy's reservations, Trump enjoys overwhelming support among Republicans in the House. The former president has received roughly 60 endorsements, while his closest competitor, DeSantis, has received only five.
