Elon Musk, the owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, has requested that the public vote on whether or not to restore Infowars host Alex Jones' account. Musk stated that upholding the ban on Jones would be inconsistent with his commitment to free speech.
Musk asked X users in a poll he ran on Saturday afternoon if they wanted him to "reinstate Alex Jones on this platform." As of the time of writing, 70% of respondents supported Jones' reinstatement and 30% were against it.

In his article, Elon Musk stated, "Vox Populi, Vox Dei." When Musk restored the account of former US President Donald Trump following a comparable vote in the previous year, he used this Latin proverb, which means "the voice of the people is the voice of God."
In 2018, Silicon Valley corporations removed Jones and his InfoWars channel from all major social media platforms, alleging “hate speech” and claimed violations of their rules of service. Jones' claimed "intolerance against certain communities and religions" also resulted in a prohibition from using PayPal for business transactions.
Musk reversed several of the company's speech restrictions and censorship procedures after acquiring Twitter last year, renaming the network as X, and granting past-banned users a "general amnesty." He did, however, write last year that he would never permit Jones to return following the murder of his young son, characterizing the Infowars shock jock as someone “who would use the deaths of children for gain, politics or fame.”
In the past, Jones had maintained that the Sandy Hook school massacre in 2012 was staged by the US government to increase public support for gun regulation. A court last year ordered Jones to pay over $1.5 billion in damages after a group of victims' relatives sued him for his remarks. Jones promised to challenge the ruling and declared bankruptcy soon after the verdict.
After interviewing the infamous pundit earlier this week, Tucker Carlson, the former host of Fox News and current anchor of a self-produced show on X, seems to have softened Musk's attitude of Jones. Jones stated that he recognized that if Musk allowed him back on X, “the ADL and others would actually be able to take down Twitter.” Carlson began the hour-long conversation with Jones by referring to him as “the most censored individual in the English language."
Musk and the Jewish NGO Anti-Defamation League have previously disagreed over X's supposed acceptance of "rampant hate speech." After Musk threatened to sue the ADL for alienating sponsors with "false accusations," the two parties resolved their differences.
"I vehemently disagree with what he said about Sandy Hook, but are we a platform that believes in freedom of speech or are we not?" Musk tweeted in response to an X user later on Saturday. That's what everything ultimately boils down to. Financially, this will hurt X if the people vote him back in, but beliefs are more important than money," he continued.
