Texas Woman Admits To Threatening Trump Judge; Clarifies No Intention To Act On Plans

According to prosecutors, a woman from Texas has been accused of leaving a voicemail message in which she threatened to kill the judge presiding over the federal election interference case involving former President Trump.

According to Bloomberg Law, Abigail Jo Shry, aged 43, reportedly made a phone call to the chambers of US District Judge Tanya Chutkan on August 5. This incident occurred two days after the former president was arraigned in the case. As per court records, Shry allegedly made a threatening statement, stating, "If Trump fails to secure the presidency in 2024, we intend to harm you, therefore exercise caution."

NBC reports that court documents indicate Shry used a racial slur and referred to the Black judge as a "stupid slave." According to a criminal complaint, Shry allegedly made threats towards US Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, an African American Democrat representing parts of Houston in her district (The New York Times, n.d.).

According to the complaint, during the visit to Shry's residence in Alvin, located south of Houston, federal agents were informed that she confessed to making the calls. Shry also mentioned that she had no intentions of traveling to Washington or Houston, but expressed concern if Sheila Jackson Lee were to visit Alvin.

During a detention hearing held in federal court in Houston, Shry was denied bail and instructed to remain in custody for a minimum of 30 days.

According to court documents, the father testified during the hearing that Shry is a "nonviolent alcoholic" who spends her days on the couch, consuming excessive amounts of beer while watching the news (The Times, [date]). According to his statement, she occasionally becomes agitated by the news after consuming alcohol, leading her to make phone calls and issue threats.
